TV tips for the week of Nov. 2

(Canadian Press DataFile Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Today on the tube ...

By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Monday, Nov. 2 - The ratings war known as ``November sweeps'' is on, so ``CSI: Miami'' is trying to lure in viewers tonight with a wild story involving a bachelor party, a murder and a missing husband-to-be. The title of the episode: ``Dude, Where's My Groom?'' (CBS) While we're on the topic of death during debauchery, ``Castle'' _ which was recently picked up for a full season _ serves up a creepy storyline involving the murder of a rock star. Not only was he killed _ someone put his dead body in the band's hit music video and nobody realized he wasn't alive. Hampering the investigation are obsessed fans, sleazy managers and jealous band members. (A) - And speaking of debauchery, lothario Hank of ``Californication'' debates his ex over how to parent their daughter, Becca, who has a big blowout with her best friend. Meanwhile, Hank's agent, Charlie, is upset about his wife's relationship with her girlhood crush. (The Movie Network, Movie Central) Today on the tube ...

By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Tuesday, Nov. 3 - The alien invasion is here. In the series ``V,'' debuting tonight, seemingly friendly otherworldly beings called The Visitors arrive on Earth with a message of peace. But not everyone believes their genial and generous nature _ and they shouldn't. As we soon learn, The Visitors have a malicious agenda to mess with human nature. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell (``Lost''), who plays an FBI agent, Scott Wolf (``Party of Five'') as a news anchor, and Toronto native Laura Vandervoort (``Smallville'') in the role of a ``V recruiter.'' The show is re-imagining of the hit 1980s miniseries of the same name. (CTV, ABC) - Edward Norton produces ``By the People: The Election of Barack Obama,'' a behind-the-scenes story of the president's two-year journey to the White House. Filmmakers Amy Rice and Alicia Sams started rolling their cameras for the piece nearly a year before Barack Obama announced his candidacy for the presidency. Included are candid moments with wife Michelle Obama, the couple's young daughters and campaign staff and supporters. (HBO Canada) Wednesday, Nov. 4 By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press - Henry the VIII is now a widower (but of course not without bed mates) on ``The Tudors,'' and Cromwell is on a mission to find him a Protestant wife. Enter Anne of Cleves, played by British soul singer Joss Stone. This marks Stone's first time acting on a TV series, and in a recent interview with The Canadian Press, the Grammy winner said it was a ``very scary'' experience but she ``loved it'' _ so much so, that she's coming back to play the same role next season. Stone said while doing research on Cleves, she started to ``feel really sorry for her'' because ``she was all by herself, she had no friends, she was being told that she was positively disgusting, she just felt very unattractive, and all she was trying to do was please him.'' (CBC) - ``Glee'' is airing repeats during the World Series, giving viewers an open window to check out another heralded comedy offering: ``Modern Family,'' starring Ed O'Neill of ``Married With Children'' fame. Hailed by some critics as one of the best new comedies of the fall, the series features on three families. Tonight we see the Delgado-Pritchett clan rallying behind mature teen Manny's new interest: fencing. (Citytv, ABC) Today on the tube ...

By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Thursday, Nov. 5 - Two characters from the series ``Supernatural'' have a cameo on ``Grey's Anatomy'' tonight. Sam and Dean Winchester, played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively, guest star as medical staff at Seattle Grace, which gets a generous donation in this episode. Elsewhere, Alex tries to figure out how to pay for all of Izzie's hospital bills left over after her cancer treatment. (CTV) - The 2009 ``MTV Europe Music Awards'' air from Germany, where they were first held 20 years ago when the Berlin Wall fell, and network officials say this year's instalment offers ``unpredictability and sheer mayhem.'' Pop star Katy Perry hosts as acts including Jay-Z, Robbie Williams, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Shakira, Leona Lewis and Tokio Hotel perform. Lady Gaga and Kings of Leon lead the nominations with five each. (MuchMusic) Today on the tube ...

By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Friday, Nov. 6 - ``Medium'' lead character Allison won't have to use her psychic abilities to solve crimes tonight. That's because the SUV she rents has a satellite radio that allows her to hear other people's conversations. (CBS) - Next Monday marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Celebrating the event is ``Berlin: 20 Years After,'' which includes previously unseen archival material and is told from the perspective of three family members. We also meet some key figures in the history of the Wall, including the first artist who dared to paint it, and the last German to have been imprisoned for attempting to cross it. By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Saturday, Nov. 7 - Three painters infuse their canvases with Alex Trebek's likeness and moustache on ``Star Portraits.'' The venerable ``Jeopardy'' host, who hails from Sudbury, Ont., sits down for the artists to pose and chat about his long career. After two weeks, the paintings are revealed to him and he must choose only one portrait to add to his personal collection. (Bravo) - Oscar-nominated Canadian actor Ryan Gosling has been showing his musical side lately, touring Canada and the U.S. with his band Dead Man's Bones. His next film, ``All Good Things'' with Kirsten Dunst, isn't due out until next March, but you can catch one of his earlier works with tonight's airing of ``Fracture.'' The thriller stars the London, Ont.-born heartthrob as a young district attorney trying to prosecute a cunning engineer (Anthony Hopkins) who shot his wife. (MuchMoreMusic) Also noteworthy is the airing of ``Superbad,'' the hit teen comedy co-starring Brampton, Ont., native Michael Cera. (Showcase) Today on the tube ...

By Victoria Ahearn The Canadian Press Sunday, Nov. 8 - There's been a lot of talk lately about tonight's airing of ``Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show'' after Microsoft pulled out as a sponsor. The software giant announced the decision last week, saying the show's content ``was not a fit with the Windows brand.'' Fans were baffled that Microsoft didn't realize the show was so subversive before it signed on to the special, which includes celebrity guests and memorable moments from the animated series. The special airs after a new episode of ``Family Guy'' in which Brian dates an older woman. (Fox) - If ``Family Guy'' is too incendiary for your taste and you're looking for something more family-friendly, there's the second-last performance episode of ``Battle of the Blades.'' The competition has intensified lately, with critiques from top-tier guest judges, including last week's Olympic gold medallist Kristi Yamaguchi and her NHL husband Bret Hedican.
