Tucson weekend: Click here for stuff to do [The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson]
(Arizona Daily Star (Tucson) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 17--Dave Alvin at Old Town Artisans tonight
Dave Alvin opted to jump genders when he sat down to record his latest album, "Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women."
Normally, Alvin would have his regular band, The Guilty Men, backing his play. But the death of his accordionist and best friend, Chris Gaffney (one of Tucson's own), left him looking for a new direction.
He sought out some of the best women in blues, country and Americana, including steel guitarist and dobro player Cindy Cashdollar, fiddler Laurie Lewis and drummer Lisa Pankratz, for a new group.
You can catch Alvin and his Guilty Women when they play Old Town Artisans at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Tickets are $28 in advance through Antigone Books, Enchanted Earthworks and Plaza Liquors and $30 at the door.
All Souls benefit tonight
It takes a lot of money to throw a free event as monumental as the All Souls Procession, a community gathering that draws thousands downtown every year.
That's why the organizers at Many Mouths One Stomach need help raising funds for the Nov. 8 activities.
An All Souls benefit is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Club Congress, featuring music from DJ Carl Hanni, Blind Divine with artist Daniel Martin Diaz, Alter der Ruine, PLOY and Boys R Us.
A donation of $10 will get you in the door, and all costumed souls will be admitted for $8.
Enjoy food, art and wine at Rillito Park fest
Organizers expect thousands of people to attend the inaugural Southern Arizona Food, Art and Wine Festival at Rillito Park this weekend.
The Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance has lined up more than 200 food, wine and culinary-themed art vendors, in addition to music and art and family-focused fun like a pumpkin patch.
Tucson is known as a foodie town, and there was a real need for a festival open to everyone's price range, said Kate Marquez, the alliance's executive director.
There's literally something for every taste. There will be lectures by local sommeliers, cooking demos and special events such as the Southern Arizona Pizza Games (pizza pros compete in pie spinning, pizza-box folding and more) on Sunday.
--What: Southern Arizona Food, Art and Wine Festival.
--When: 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
--Where: Rillito Park, 4502 N. First Ave.
--Admission: $5; free for age 10 and younger.
'Good Boy' kicks off series at Beowulf Alley Theatre
Patrick Roddy's "Good Boy" is about a human animal who likes to keep young women, and eventually one very unlucky young man, chained up for his own devious purposes. He makes them eat dog food, among other indignities.
This creepy and darkly humorous effort will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday as the official grand opening of Beowulf Alley Theatre Company's IndeFliks @ The Alley series. Tickets are $5.
Starring Josh Marcantel (at left above, with Tommy Cole) as a guy who strays into the hands of the wrong people, "Good Boy" also features Tiffany Shepis and Gary Shannon.
Produced by Roddy and fellow Tucsonan Brian McLaughlin, along with Louisiana producer Ken Henderson, the movie was filmed in and around Lake Charles, La. All of the post-production work was done in Tucson.
Beowulf Alley is at 11 S. Sixth Ave.
