Transtec Computers Limited: transtec NAS File Servers Now for Linux; Storage systems with Open-E DSS software enable file sharing and network access with high availability

RDATE:20052008

Banbury -- transtec Computers Limited, a subsidiary of transtec AG, the
computer manufacturer based in Tubingen Germany, now offers its NAS
File Servers (Network Attached Storage) with the Linux operating
system. It is based on Open-E DSS (Data Storage Server) software.
Linux-based servers and workstations used in companies, research
institutes and data centres become even more powerful thanks to these
new storage solutions.

"The file servers ensure extremely fast data access", explains Marco
Poggioli, Storage Product Manager at transtec. "Optimum results are
achieved particularly for the Linux network protocol. The modern server
technology supports high-performance networks such as 8 GB fibre
channel and 10 GB Ethernet, the latter being better value than a 1 GB
Ethernet with comparable bandwidth." All systems are configured with
the energy-efficient Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5400 Processors with 45 Nm
technology.

The characteristic feature of these new storage systems is the flexible
data access via NAS file services as well as on block level via SAN
protocols (Storage Area Network) Fibre Channel and iSCSI (Internet
Small Computer System Interface). The advantage of Fibre Channel is the
high performance whereas iSCSI application is more cost-effective.
iSCSI is ideal for IT environments which need to be connected over
distances. All standard database applications in SAN are supported such
as Microsoft SQL Server, mail services or ERP systems.

The transtec File Servers offer additional services for
high-availability, disaster recovery and backup. Access is guaranteed
via synchronous data mirroring or iSCSI failover (geoclusters) even
during maintenance and breakdown. Additional security is guaranteed by
the snapshot function and delayed data replication from remote
locations via LAN or WAN (Local/Wide Area Network). The NDMP support
(Network Data Management Protocol) allows an effective backup of even
larger volumes of data. The storage technology WORM (Write Once Read
Many) helps to set up compliance archives for e-mails or finance data,
for example.

For data storage, unrestricted compatibility of fast SAS disks (Serial
Attached SCSI) and SATA disks (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment)
of higher capacities is provided. The storage systems can be upgraded
to 72 TB. The integrated RAID 6 protection prevents data loss even in
the event of a dual hard disk breakdown. The NAS servers can be managed
from anywhere: via a Web interface (GUI), per console access and via
Scheduler, a calendar functions for coordinating tasks. In addition,
the file servers can be integrated into the central system monitoring
of a data centre.

The eight different transtec File Server models can be configured
individually. The price for the transtec 940L Data Storage Server entry
model starts at GBP790 + VAT. The transtec 2350L file server is
available from GBP3300 + VAT, with the following specifications:

Quad-core Intel Xeon 5405 Processor 2 GB DDR2 fully-buffered cache
(max. 32 GB) Scalable from 12 to 72 SAS/SATA hard disk drives LSI

SAS8888ELP PCIe RAID controller with 512 MB ECC cache

Network integration via IP and Fibre Channel File services for
Linux/Unix, Windows, MacOS and SecureFTP/HTTP SAN storage access via
iSCSI and Fibre Channel DR services such as snapshots, mirroring,
replication WORM data archiving Fast NDMP backup
