Toshiba to build new production line at chip plant in Ishikawa

(Kyodo News International (Tokyo) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) May 31--TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. said Wednesday it will build a new production line at its semiconductor plant in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, to manufacture power devices.

Demand is growing for power devices that control current flows in consumer electronics including flat-screen television sets and video game consoles, Toshiba said.

Construction will start in September, with mass production scheduled to begin in the July-September period of 2007. At full production, the new line will produce 60,000 200-millimeter wafers a month.

Total investment in the new production facility is expected to be more than 50 billion yen in the five years to 2010, Toshiba said.

Used in almost all consumer electronics, power devices contribute to some 20 percent of Toshiba's overall semiconductor sales.
