Top Intelligence Officials Gather in Washington to Discuss Latest National Security Issues


(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WASHINGTON, Oct. 28 -- The American Bar Association issued the following news release: General counsel from the CIA, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Department of Justice, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the National Security Agency -- together in a rare appearance -- will explore updates from the executive branch on such topics as recent wide-ranging cyber breaches, insider threats, foreign intelligence, surveillance and other national security issues as part of the 24th Annual Review of the Field of National Security Law Conference, Nov. 6-7 in Washington, D.C.



What: 24th Annual Review of the Field of National Security Law Conference Sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security When: Thursday-Friday, Nov. 6-7 Where: The Capital Hilton 1001 16th St. NW Washington, D.C. 20036 The two-day conference will focus on foreign intelligence, ethical issues facing national security lawyers, economic and financial threats, military justice and cybersecurity. Featured panelists include: * Robert Litt, general counsel, Office of the Director of National Intelligence * Richard Gross, legal counsel to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff * Rajesh De, general counsel, National Security Agency * Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director, American Civil Liberties Union * Chief Judge James Baker, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces * Caroline Krass, general counsel, CIA * David Kris, general counsel, Intellectual Ventures and former DOJ National Security Division director Keynote speakers include Suzanne Spaulding, undersecretary of National Protection and Programs Directorate at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security responsible for critical infrastructure and cybersecurity; James D. Wolfensohn, chairman and chief executive officer of Wolfensohn Fund Management and former president of the World Bank; and Vice Admiral Nannette DeRenzi, judge advocate general, U.S. Navy.

Program highlights include: "The Future of Foreign Intelligence" -- Moderator: Georgetown Law Professor Laura Donohue and panelists will discuss the challenges of collecting domestic telephone metadata; foreign intelligence in a digitally connected world; and the proposal to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to provide for greater oversight, limits on collection and a new judicial structure.


Thursday, Nov. 6, 2:30 - 4:15 p.m.

"The Economic & Financial Threat Domain: Making Smart Sanctions Smarter" -- Moderator: UVA Law School Professor John Norton Moore and panelists will discuss economic sanctions as a response to terrorism and repressive regimes, and will examine the use of newer economic and legal tools, such as the use of civil litigation against supporters of terror.

Friday, Nov. 7, 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

"Cybersecurity: Will We Ever Be Secure?" -- Moderator: Jill Rhodes, chief information security officer for Trustmark Companies, and panel members will discuss cyberthreats to institutions with valuable client information -- businesses, law firms and government agencies -- relevant laws and the ethical standards lawyers need to be aware of in this increasingly dangerous arena.
