(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) India gives Pakistan evidence over Mumbai attacksNEW DELHI (AP) _ India has handed Pakistan detailed evidence on the Mumbai attacks that includes information on interrogations, weapons, and data gleaned from satellite phones that officials say proves that Pakistani "elements" were behind the deadly siege. Indian authorities said the evidence handed over Monday shows that Pakistan-based militants plotted and executed the attacks, but a top diplomat said the gunmen may also have had ties to Pakistani authorities.



China targets Google in pornography crackdownBEIJING (AP) _ China warned Google and other popular Web portals that they must do more to block pornographic material from reaching Chinese users, the latest in a series of government crackdowns targeting Internet content. The warning Monday focused on pornography but is part of a larger Chinese effort to control freedom of expression and root out material it considers destabilizing, such as sites that criticize the Communist Party, promote democratic reform or advocate Taiwan independence.

Concerns of civilian deaths rise in Sri LankaCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ Sri Lankan forces have overrun another village and moved closer to seizing a strategic base from the Tamil Tigers, but concerns are mounting for the hundreds of thousands of civilians living in the rebels' shrinking territory. Government troops captured the rebel-held town of Oddusudan on Monday and have chased the rebels out of much of their de facto state in the north in recent months _ taking their administrative capital of Kilinochchi last week.



NKorea mobilizes 100,000 for new year rallySEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ Tens of thousands of North Koreans have rallied in a display of might and loyalty underscoring their government's guiding "military first" principal amid tensions with rival South Korea. The government mobilized 100,000 North Koreans for the annual New Year's rally, which honors leader Kim Jong Il and reaffirms full public support for his rule in the year ahead.

Taliban whopper: claim 5,220 foreign troops killedKABUL, Afghanistan (AP) _ The Taliban has long exaggerated its military successes, but its figures for 2008 may be the militia's most startling claims yet. The Taliban claims its forces last year killed 5,220 foreign troops, downed 31 aircraft, destroyed 2,818 NATO and Afghan vehicles and killed 7,552 Afghan soldiers and police.

Japanese sailor lost off whaling ship in AntarcticWELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) _ A crew member of Japan's controversial whale-hunting fleet was missing and presumed dead Monday after he apparently fell overboard in freezing Antarctic waters south of New Zealand, officials said. Japan's coast guard requested New Zealand's help after the whaling vessel Kyoshin Maru No. 2 reported that a 30-year-old Japanese national had fallen overboard, according to Mike Roberts of New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Center.

Fire at Bangkok mall kills 1 man, dozens injuredBANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ A blaze in a shopping and residential plaza in Bangkok's Chinatown district killed one person and injured at least 38 others, police said Monday. The fire broke out Sunday night at the Sua Pa Plaza, trapping a number of residents who attempted to reach the building's roof for evacuation by helicopters.

Muslim states seek UN session on Gaza conflictKUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) _ Muslim countries plan to seek a U.N. General Assembly special session to press for a halt to the escalating violence in Gaza, Malaysia's leader said Monday. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Malaysia's permanent representative to the U.N. will hold discussions with other officials in the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference, or OIC, on how best to push for such a session.

Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan in attackSYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ An Australian soldier was killed in Afghanistan during a Taliban rocket attack, the Defense Department said Monday. The soldier was killed instantly Sunday when a Taliban-fired rocket exploded in a compound in the southern province of Uruzgan where a group of Australian troops was stationed, Defense Force Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston told reporters in Canberra. No other soldiers or civilians were injured in the attack, he said.

Series of quakes hit eastern Indonesia, killing 1MANOKWARI, Indonesia (AP) _ A series of powerful earthquakes killed a 10-year-old girl and seriously injured dozens in remote eastern Indonesia, briefly triggering fears of another tsunami in a country still recovering from 2004's deadly waves. One of the quakes _ of magnitude 7.3 _ was felt as far away as Australia and sent small tsunamis into Japan's southeastern coast.

Japan's parliament opens amid pressure for pollsTOKYO (AP) _ Japan's parliament convened Monday for a 150-day session amid calls from the opposition for snap elections that Prime Minister Taro Aso has vowed he will not hold until after he deals with shoring up the country's fragile economy. In the lower house, Aso's Cabinet submitted an extra budget worth 4.8 trillion yen ($52 billion) to stimulate the recession-hit economy. He will also submit a record 88.5 trillion yen ($962 billion) budget for the next fiscal year starting in April 2009 to the parliament later in the month.

2 dead, dozens missing in Nepal boat accidentKATMANDU, Nepal (AP) _ An overcrowded boat carrying mostly women and children capsized in a river in eastern Nepal on Sunday, killing two people and leaving dozens missing. More than 50 people were believed on board the boat and only 14 were rescued from the Saptakosi river, about 250 miles (400 kilometers) southeast of the capital Katmandu, government official Durga Bhandari said.

Thai police to charge club owner over deadly fireBANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ The owner of a Thai nightclub where at least 62 revelers perished in a New Year's Eve fire will face criminal charges over the blaze, which was likely sparked by a countdown fireworks display on the stage of the jammed nightspot, police said Sunday. Wisuth Setsawat, a Thai-Chinese businessman, broke down in tears as he offered apologies to relatives of the victims Sunday before being questioned by police over the disaster at his Santika Club.

Small tsunamis hit Japan's southeast coastTOKYO (AP) _ Small tsunamis hit Japan's southeast coast Sunday morning after powerful earthquakes struck Indonesia overnight. There were no reports of damage. Japan's Meteorological Agency said tsunamis of 4 inches (10 centimeters) to 16 inches (40 centimeters) in height splashed ashore in towns along the coast. It also warned that bigger tsunamis were possible later.

Fireworks factory blast kills 13 in eastern ChinaBEIJING (AP) _ An explosion at an illegal fireworks factory in eastern China killed 13 people, state media reported Sunday. The blast occurred Saturday in an abandoned kiln being used illegally to produce fireworks in the city of Weifang in Shandong province, said the official Xinhua News Agency.
