Time Warner grouping digital channels by theme

Oct 11, 2009 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Time Warner Cable's digital service travels in packs starting this week, with channel numbers on the digital tier grouped by theme in a bid to, according to the area's largest cable television provider, make it easier for viewers to browse.

If you have Time Warner's basic cable service, don't worry. Channels 1 through 99 will stay the same. They'll be repeated in the digital channels as well.

Starting Tuesday, the channels numbering 100 and higher will be herded into similar-themed groups. For example, channels with kids and family programming start at 101 (Disney Channel) and go through to 117 (Hallmark Movie Channel). Other groupings include sports, news/weather, movies and music.

Free on-demand channels are now numbered 400 through 499, with movies-on-demand services at 500 through 599 and premium channels numbering 600 through 699.

Adding '1' High-definition channels should be easier to find in the new system -- they'll have the same number as the non-HD digital channel, with a "1" in front. For example: USA Network turns up on the digital tier at 201, and its HD channel on 1201. (USA is also available at Channel 34.) More than 65% of Time Warner's southeast Wisconsin subscribers have digital service. Subscribers were supposed to receive a printed copy of the new digital channel lineups in recent weeks.

The restructuring of the digital channel lineup is in part a response to customers' interest in a more logical channel setup, said Stacy Zaja, director of community and media relations for Time Warner Cable Wisconsin. The changes also free up spots on the digital dial for more channels, especially HD offerings, she said.

In addition to the digital channel number changes, Time Warner is adding five channels to its digital tier Tuesday: Nick 2 (Channel 110), Military History (138), Ovation (210), Crime & Investigation (222) and RFD-TV (229). And Wisconsin On Demand/Local On Demand, which shows programming of local and state interest, moves Tuesday from Channel 1111 to 411.
