Thomas Siebel Addresses Future of the Grid at Wall Street Journal's ECO:nomics

C3 Energy CEO Thomas M. Siebel answered questions surrounding the future of the grid during an on-stage interview with Wall Street Journal Contributing Editor Jeff Ball yesterday during ECO:nomics 2015.

As an invited industry expert, Siebel spoke on how next-generation technology is driving innovation across the grid. Siebel and Ball discussed the technologies that are necessary to modernize energy systems worldwide, including cloud computing, machine learning, and big data analytics. Siebel also addressed challenges to the future of the smart grid, including regulations that impede technology advancement for utilities.

"Utilities should be encouraged to lead the way to a more modernized electric system. Progress has been damatic in the current decade, but current state regulations have not kept pace," said Siebel. "Utility regulatory agencies should allow rate recovery for cloud-based solutions in order to accelerate the adoption curve and accessibility of today's innovative computing models and reduce the current, unnecessary barriers to technology advancement in the utility industry. This is an essential step in the transformation to a smarter, more efficient, and more sustainable energy system."

During the three-day event, ECO:nomics 2015 convened global CEOs, top entrepreneurs, environmental experts, policy makers, and leading thinkers to identify and assess the most compelling opportunities and pressing risks emerging around the world in businesses impacted by the environment. The event was held March 25-27 at the Barcara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara, Calif.
