THIS WEEK: 3,957 Events and Activities in Texas to Raise Awareness About School ChoiceSchool Choice Week began in Texas and across America this Sunday, with the goal of raising awareness about the options that parents have for their children's education. The Week will feature 3,957 events and activities across the Lone Star State, including open house events at schools, school fairs, homeschool information sessions, and other celebrations. In addition, an education expo is planned on Saturday, January 27 at the Minute Maid Park. Nationwide, 32,240 events and activities are being organized to raise awareness during National School Choice Week (Jan. 21-27, 2018), and nearly 7 million Americans are expected to participate. It will be the largest series of education-related events and activities in U.S. history. The Week brings attention to the different education environments that are available for Texas's more than 7.1 million children. For example, families in Texas can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The state's public school open enrollment policy is one of the nation's broadest and most accommodating. The state also offers tuition-free, public online schooling. The counties of Brooks, Kimble, Lampasas, Lynn, Mendard, Robertson, Tyler, and Wilson and the cities of Allen, Anson, Carrizo Springs, Combine, Escobares, Elgin, Ferris, Friendswood, Galveston, Grapevine, Halcones Heights, Honey Grove, Horseshoe Bay, Irving, Prosper, Rockwall, Liberty, Lyford, Odem, Richardson (News - Alert), Sour Lake, Splendora, Steven Points, Sulphur Springs, Tool, West Orane, Gun Barrel City, West University, Piney Point Village, Seagoville, Tomball, Fulton, Addison, and Westlake have issued proclamations recognizing School Choice Week in their community. "Deciding where their kids will go to school is one of the most important decision parents will make for them. We want parents to know they have a choice and we want them to make an educated decision. We wanted to make sure our community knows this, even if their choice isn't St. Clement's," said Karla Martinez, director of advancement at St. Clement's Parish School, a private school serving 350 students from age 3 to grade 8 in El Paso, Texas. Celebrated since 2011, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort. The Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and it is not related to any legislative advocacy campaign. "Students, parents, teachers, and community leaders across Texas continue to demonstrate their unflagging commitment to providing parents with education options for their children," said Andrew Campanella, president of National School Choice Week.
