TheWorldTonight: CDs die out as the mp3 takes over
(Coventry Evening Telegraph Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)THE popularity of mp3 players such as Apple's iPod is creating a mountain of unused CDs, according to online marketplace eBay.
Music lovers are steadily transferring their collections to their computer.
Many of the 7.38 billion CDs owned by UK households are becoming redundant as a result, the online auction site said.
eBay estimates that music from CDs worth pounds 17.2 billion will have been transferred on to mp3 players in the UK by the end of this year.
The auction site's figures are based on a survey of 1,000 UK households which showed the average person had 164 CDs in their music collection worth pounds 1,150.
A CD mountain worth up to pounds 52 billion would be created if everyone in the UK transferred their CD music collections to the mp3 format, the auction site said.
