Televisa says Mexico rejects Iusacell purchase
(Associated Press Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MEXICO CITY -- The world's largest Spanish-language media company says its planned move into Mexico's mobile-phone market has been rejected by the country's anti-monopoly regulator.
Televisa says Mexico's Federal Competition Commission has voted 5-3 against its purchase of a $1.6 billion, 50 percent share of mobile-phone operator Iusacell.
Televisa, Iusacell and outside experts have said the move could generate more competition in Mexico's mobile-phone market. Seventy percent of the cellular phone business in Mexico is controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim's Telcel.
The Federal Competition Commission has not issued its decision or commented. Televisa says it will appeal.
