TelAlaska Picks Aktino to Deliver Powerful Long Loop Solution for DSLAM Backhaul

IRVINE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- June 1, 2006 -- TelAlaska, a rural Alaska communications service provider, has selected equipment from Aktino, the industry leader in delivery of business-class broadband services over embedded copper loops, to meet surging bandwidth demands among its DSL customers. Aktino announced the deployment today.

Aktino's MIMO on DMT-based AK4000 Ethernet platform backhauls Ethernet traffic from a remote IP DSLAM back to the central office. Like most telcos in the competitive residential broadband market, TelAlaska needs significant increases in capacity in response to increasing customer numbers and bandwidth demands. This growth is straining the carrier's legacy copper transport technology.

In one particular situation with TelAlaska, the AK4000 delivers 10 Mbps of symmetric Ethernet bandwidth over a long (19,800 feet) run over six pairs of 24-gauge copper. This reach of more than three and a half miles is accomplished without repeaters. The binder containing the six loops also contains several other disturbers, including T1s. Aktino's MIMO on DMT technology performs in a completely T1.417 compliant mode and protects other services like ADSL in the binder.

"We were concerned that with a DSLAM that remote we weren't going to be able to deliver the higher backhaul capacity with T1s on HDSL on the few available pairs or we would have to undertake an expensive fiber construction project," said Jim Mathe, Telecom Network Director for TelAlaska. "The Aktino equipment outperformed our expectations, providing more than ample bandwidth on the few available pairs at such a long distance without repeaters. Aktino's footprint advantage is a real benefit to our business."

The TelAlaska Installation Crew of Steve Shelton and Dan Sieminski were equally pleased at the ease of installation and provisioning of the Aktino product.

TelAlaska and its family of companies provide telecom services throughout the state, from the Aleutian Islands to central Alaska.

"The TelAlaska installation is one more example of Aktino's ability to give a carrier the service footprint it needs to serve its customers effectively," said Bruce Kimble, president and CEO of Aktino. "As far as bandwidth is concerned, it's really all about the footprint, whether that involves more typical deployments or extra-long distances, as in TelAlaska's case."

Aktino's AK4000, an Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) solution, is the industry's first cost-effective and operationally feasible business broadband solution that bridges a critical service gap. That is the gap between high-bandwidth, high-margin Ethernet over fiber services and low-bandwidth DS1 or Ethernet over DS1 HDSL-based solutions. Aktino's AK3000 DS3 product can perform the same function for traditional ATM-based DSLAMs via an ATM DS3 interface.

About Aktino

Aktino designs and delivers innovative carrier-class long reach broadband over copper solutions that enable service providers to offer a broad footprint of revenue-generating business-class broadband services over existing copper loops. Recognizing that "It's the Footprint" that matters when it comes to service provision in a carrier's serving area, Aktino is a pioneer in the use of industry standard DMT (Discrete Multi Tone) with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) in the wireline domain. Aktino's products, including its MEF 9-certified AK4000 family, enable service providers to deliver more services to a larger footprint than any other copper-based broadband solution.
