Tecore Awarded Contract to Combat Contraband Cell Phones in Maryland
COLUMBIA, Md. --(Business Wire)--
Tecore (News - Alert) Networks®, the inventor of Managed Access technology and pioneer
global supplier of 2G, 3G, and 4G mobile network infrastructures, today
announced that it has been awarded a contract by the Maryland Department
of Public Safety and Correctional Services to implement its iNAC Managed
Access solution. The program, aimed at combating the State's contraband
cell phone problem in prisons, starts with a project implemented in the
heart of downtown Baltimore at the Metropolitan Transition Center.
Tecore's iNAC Managed Access solution is a highly innovative technology
that controls cell phone usage in a targeted area, allowing authorized
users to make calls while blocking those that are unauthorized. In the
case of prisons, wardens, officers, doctors, and other government
personnel can be authorized to use their phones, while preventing
inmates from using their smuggled cell phones. This serves as the ideal
alternative to jamming that blocks all signals indiscriminately and is,
in turn, illegal. iNAC technology also supports key regulatory features
such as E911. iNAC Managed Access is currently deployed in Parchman,
Mississippi where the system has blocked millions of illegal calls and
messaging attempts in just under two years of operation
After the murder of a key eyewitness in a 2007 homicide trial was
coordinated from a Baltimore jail on a contraband cell phone, Maryland
quickly became a State at the forefront of the battle against the
epidemic of contraband cell phones in prison. By implementing different
detection methods, such as cell phone sniffing dogs and investing in
state-of-the-art entrance security equipment, Maryland's prisons have
become safer. Now, it has turned to Tecore's state-of-the-art Managed
Access technology that puts the control of communications back in the
hands of the correctional institution.
"Managed access and detection is the next step in our efforts to stop
illegal cell phones in our institutions. This technology is our best
option for protecting our staff and the public," said DPSCS Secretary
Gary D. Maynard.
Senator Barbara Mikulski (D) lauded the program, telling the Gazette.net
earlier: "The men and women charged with keeping our communities safe
must have the tools they need to combat illegal cell phone use on the
inside and protect our neighbors and families on the outside."
"As a Maryland-based company, it is very exciting for Tecore to
implement its technology in our home state," said Joe Gerrity, Chief
Financial Officer at Tecore Networks. "The scope and ramifications of
the contraband cell phone problem has been a major concern of the
corrections industry. Many lives have been jeopardized by this epidemic,
and we are proud that our State leadership has taken an aggressive
stance towards implementing the appropriate technology to address it."
