Technavio Announces Top Four Emerging Trends Impacting the Data Center Cooling Market in Southeast Asia Through 2020

Technavio's latest report on the data center cooling market in Southeast Asia provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to impact the market outlook from 2016-2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

Rakesh Kumar Panda, a lead analyst from Technavio, specializing in research on data center sector, says, "The evolution of cloud-based services and big data analytics has fueled the demand for advanced data center solutions, resulting in a spate of innovations in the data center cooling space. Enterprises are building better data center facilities that can deliver high efficiency and reduce power consumption. This has necessitated the usage of containment cooling solutions and rack revel cooling systems."

The top four emerging trends driving the data center cooling market in Southeast Asia according to Technavio ICT research analysts are:

  • Construction of green data centers
  • Increased traction of modular data center models
  • Emergence of liquid immersion cooling solutions
  • Rising use of economizers

Construction of green data centers

Increased carbon emissions and high consumption of electricity in data centers worldwide is creating awareness among enterprises with regard to the construction of green data center facilities. These services help in the operation of energy efficient IT, power, and cooling infrastructure, thereby reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Advanced technologies and strategies are implemented in data centers to improve its performance. Concepts such as free cooling, use of renewable energy sources, consolidation, and waste recycling are some of the methodologies being implemented in green data centers. Google (News - Alert), Amazon, Microsoft, and Facebook are involved in the operation of green data cener facilities.

Increased traction of modular data center models

The adoption of containerized data center models has increased in Southeast Asia owing to their suitability for the business operations of SMEs. These models are likely to gain traction in the future as they are cost-effective and consume less power compared to traditional facilities. They comprise of IT equipment, including servers, air conditioning units, and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.

Hitachi (News - Alert) designs modular data center models in Southeast Asia. These models can withstand high external temperature (which can reach 104°F) and humid conditions. The adoption of these standards is, therefore, increasing in the region. In addition, these models are cost-effective and lower the capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX (News - Alert)) considerably.

Emergence of liquid immersion cooling solutions

Liquid immersion cooling works on the principle of liquid submersion technology, wherein the servers and other IT equipment are placed inside tanks containing non-conductive coolants. Heat generated by the equipment is dissolved by the coolant and is circulated throughout the system. The technique offers uniform and adequate cooling as well as high thermal efficiency in cooling high-density computing equipment.

High-performance computing, which is considered the future of enterprise data centers, will pave the way for the adoption of liquid cooling systems in the near future. The high density and energy efficiency offered by these systems will support their adoption.

Rising use of economizers

Economizers are integrated with data center cooling solutions to transfer the heat generated by data centers to the external environment. When the ambient temperature is lower than the temperature inside a data center, the outer air is transmitted to the data center with the help of an economizer to provide natural cooling.

Economizers can be shut down to save power if the internal temperature of a data center is favorable. "Although economizers increase the initial capital investment, they reduce the operating expenditure of cooling solutions considerably. They also contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and the overall operating expenditure associated with data centers," says Rakesh.
