Tech Test Drive: 'Dead Space' (Xbox 360)

Oct 20, 2008 (San Jose Mercury News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Occasionally a video game comes along that you can't ignore, and "Dead Space" is one. A game loaded with high production values, gripping story and the backing of publishing giant Electronic Arts, "Dead Space" is poised to be a blockbuster. "Dead Space" is a sci-fi survival tale combined with the horror of a Clive Barker film. When a mining space ship comes into contact with a mysterious alien artifact, its communications with Earth are mysteriously cut off. Engineer Isaac Clarke is sent to repair the communications array but finds himself in a living nightmare.

The good: The story is compelling and the visuals are haunting (in a good way). Limited ammo forces players to strategically beat enemies rather than just shoot away.

The bad: Some repetitive mission objectives are often cliche. "Go to objective room; fight enemies; door is locked; fight enemies; find key; unlock door; fight a boss." Hmm.

The bottom line: This game can easily be compared to last year's megahit "Bioshock." But make no mistake: This isn't that game and has some distance to go before being that good. However, at several key points in the story, you'll come across some of the most amazing and frightening monsters ever seen in the survival horror genre. In that way, "Dead Space" is a remarkable video game.
