Teardown Finds Cypress TrueTouch Gen5 Capacitive Touchscreen Solution Driving Multi-Touch Display of Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Smartphone

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 18 August 2014 Release date- 15082014 - SAN JOSE, Calif. - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq: CY), the market leader in capacitive touch-sensing, today announced TechInsights' Teardown.com has found that the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini smartphone employs a CypressTrueTouch Gen5 touchscreen controller.

The teardown of the Galaxy S5 Mini identifies that the Cypress TMA545 controller drives the touchscreen and notes that the Cypress controller replaced competing controllers used in the design of the previous Galaxy S4 Mini and S3 Mini smartphones.

The Galaxy S5 Mini takes advantage of advanced features of the Gen5 solution, including gloved-finger tracking and 'hover' functionality. Gen5 delivers accurate navigation of touchscreens even through thick gloves, greatly improving user convenience. It tracks up to 10 fingers in thin gloves and two fingers with thicker gloves, such as those used by skiers.

'This design win is another indication of the strong momentum that our TrueTouch Gen5 touchscreen controller family is generating with top OEMs and throughout our customer base,' said Hassane El-Khoury, executive vice president of Cypress's Programmable Systems Division. 'Gen5 is winning due to its unique combination of top sensitivity, noise immunity and advanced features, such as support for glove touch, hover and waterproofing.' Teardown.com's Product Manager Stacy Wegner attributes the design win to Cypress addressing an increasing trend in providing a better touch interaction across multiple environmental variables. 'When we discovered the Cypress TrueTouch controller in the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, we viewed it as validation of Samsung's commitment to bring advanced touch features across its line of products,' said Wegner.

With Cypress's unique and patented DualSense technology to execute both self-capacitance and mutual-capacitance measurements in the same device, the Gen5 family offers the industry's best waterproofing for seamless performance in real-world conditions, including the presence of rain, condensation, or sweat.

By combining this powerful architecture with an industry leading 32-bit ARM Cortex M-Core processor that is known for high-efficiency MIPS/mW, Gen5 controllers boast 120-Hz refresh rates and low power consumption. Gen5 controllers drive the touchscreen at 10V and at high frequency with narrow-band, single-pass scanning and advanced hardware DSP filtering.

Electronic noise from displays and after-market chargers can disrupt a touchscreen's ability to operate properly. The TrueTouch Gen5 family's ChargerArmor feature delivers unprecedented 40 volt peak-to-peak (Vpp) charger noise immunity measured from 1 to 500 kHz with an ultra-thin 0.5-mm cover lens and a finger-size up to 22 mm-the most stringent specifications used to measure any touchscreen controller.

No competing controllers deliver noise immunity over 15 Vpp under these conditions. The unique features of TrueTouch are backed by an industry-leading portfolio of more than 100 capacitive touch sensing patents.

About TrueTouch Cypress's TrueTouch technology provides the industry's best noise immunity, highest SNR, best waterproofing, fastest refresh rates, lowest power consumption, and world's best accuracy and linearity.
