TDS announces three ARRA broadband stimulus projects are partially accessible to customers

(ENP Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ENP Newswire - 08 April 2014 Release date- 04042014 - TDS Telecom (TDS) announces three more American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus-funded broadband Internet projects are accessible to some customers.

The projects, which are expected to be completed this spring, will enable a combined 2,750 more households to gain access to high-speed Internet service in parts of Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

TDS is receiving funding for 44 projects, including these three, from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS) as part of the ARRA.

In Kentucky, partial completion of the project around Salem provides some area households and businesses access to high-speed Internet service. The project will provide about 550 area households with high-speed Internet service. More than 30 miles of fiber optics and nine new cabinets (which protect the advanced network electronics) are being placed throughout TDS' Salem Telephone Company.

Partial completion of the project, in the southeast corner of Yalobusha County in Mississippi, means high-speed Internet service is now accessible to some residents and businesses. The project will enable businesses -and about 600 residents in parts of Yalobusha as well as Grenada, Calhoun, and Webster counties - access to high-speed Internet service. More than 50 miles of fiber optics cabling is being installed and 17 cabinets are being placed throughout TDS' Calhoun City Telephone Company to provide the increased access.

Construction on the stimulus-funded broadband project, around Bruceton, Tennessee, is now partially accessible. Once complete, businesses - and nearly 1,600 residents in parts of Bruceton, Cornersville, Decaturville, Darden, and Waynesboro - will gain access to a high-speed Internet connection. More than 100 miles of fiber optics cabling and 22 cabinets are being installed to expand Internet access throughout this area, known as TDS' Tennessee Telephone Company.

Nationwide, more than 95 percent of TDS customers already have access to high-speed Internet service. TDS is intent on providing as many remaining customers with broadband connectivity as possible. According to TDS, federal stimulus funds are helping to close the gap and deliver Internet access to more than 27,000 customers.
