Tates files for city council
CORSICANA, Feb 14, 2012 (Corsicana Daily Sun - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
As of Monday morning, the race for precinct 2 on the Corsicana City Council was a three-person competition, with the filing of Leon Tates.
Tates will go up against long-time incumbent Ruby Williams, and challenger Ralph Gonzalez.
Tates, 39, is the store manager of McCoy's Building Supply, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, and president of the board for the Boys and Girls Club of Navarro County. Married to Yolanda Tates for 10 years, they have two daughters, Leah and Jasmine.
"I want to make a difference in my community," Tates said Monday afternoon. "So many things are really basic, road repair and lots that need to be mowed, houses that need to be either demolished or remodeled.
"Precinct 2 has some important entrances to the city off (Interstate) 45," Tates pointed out. "We need to make sure that corridor coming into the city is beautified. To make it attractive to people coming into the city. I want to make sure our community is a reflection of the overall city."
Formerly a resident of Precinct 3, Tates moved to Precinct 2 eight months ago after remodeling the parsonage at the church. Living in the eastern side of the city has been important in his awareness of the community's needs, he said.
"It's been an eye-opener," Tates said. "I can see the need and hear the need."
Seats open on the Corsicana City Council on May 12 are for Precinct 1, currently held by Tom Wilson; Precinct 2, currently held by Williams; and the city attorney job, currently held by Terry Jacobson. Jacobson was appointed to the position when no one filed for the city attorney job in the last election.
