Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core Achieves Milestone for Mobile Calls Processed by an IMS Core Network

RICHARDSON, Texas --(Business Wire)--

Taqua (News - Alert)®, LLC, a leading supplier of IP-based mobile and fixed communications systems, applications, and services, announced today that Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core (VMC) has processed more than two billion mobile calls over commercial IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS) networks.

IMS is an architectural framework for delivering IP multimedia services. It was originally specified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) wireless standards body as an open architecture or framework for evolving the mobile network for delivering next generation IP-based services. Taqua's VMC is a 4G mobile core designed to operate in both IMS and pre-IMS networks and enable a variety of new IP-based voice and messaging services including Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi), Voice over LTE (News - Alert) (VoLTE), and Small Cells.

Within an IMS network, the VMC operates as an integrated set of standard Application Servers including a Telephony Application Server (TAS), IP Short Message Gateway (News - Alert) (IP-SM-GW), and Service Centralization and Continuity Application Server (SCC-AS). Spurred by the growth of services such as Wi-Fi Calling, Taqua's VMC recently processed its two billionth call within a commercial IMS network.

"Two billion mobile calls over IMS is certainly a significant milestone for our Virtual Mobile Core," said John Hodley, Taqua's wireless chief technology officer. "For mobile operators, it's also important to note that the VMC is a versatile, reliable platform that can interwork within any multivendor IMS network. Consistent, high quality mobile services have to be top of mind as carriers augment and work to evolve their traditional circuit switched voice and messaging services."

About the Taqua Virtual Mobile Core

Taqua's Virtual Mobile Core (VMC) is a 4G mobile service core that enables rapid deployment of next generation mobile voice and messaging services including VoWiFi, VoLTE and Small Cells. Deployed and in service within Tier 1 operator networks today, the VMC is a carrier-grade software product providing a number of 3GPP standard functions, including the following:

  • Telephony Application Server (TAS): The VMC's GSMA IR.92/IR.94 compliant TAS function also supports integrated MSC (News - Alert)/VLR and IM-SSF capabilities enabling deployment within existing 2G/3G CS networks, including feature parity.
  • IP Short Message Gateway (IP-SM-GW): The VMC's IP-SM-GW function enables SMS delivery over IP networks, including service continuity on LTE and Wi-Fi without requiring any changes in 2G/3G systems including existing SMSCs.
  • Service Centralization and Continuity Application Server (SCC-AS): The VMC's SCC-AS function bridges Circuit-Switched (CS) and Packet-Switched (PS) environments to enable seamless voice communications across disparate networks.
  • Media Resource Function (MRF): The VMC's MRF function provides efficient processing and management of media streams for announcements, tones, conferencing and more.
