Taking 'Do Not Call' to the next level

Nov 15, 2008 (The Citizens' Voice - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The state and federal "Do Not Call" lists continue to be one of the more popular government programs. But one Web site is using the federal database of telemarketing numbers to further prevent the calls.

The site www.callercomplaints.com, started earlier this year, has a searchable database of more than 3 million phone numbers of telemarketing and other phone numbers. The site allows users to report complaints about phone numbers, allowing users to review the complaints and better know about phone scams and other problems.

The site recently acquired the Federal Trade Commission's "Do Not Call List" complaints data and is the first Web site to publish that information online.

"Frustrated by the lack of adequate safeguards available to consumers, CallerComplaints.com was launched in 2008, designed to provide citizens with a way to fight back," a news release from the Web site reported.

It's just another way to prepare against unwanted calls.

Checking gas prices
Gas prices have dropped but that doesn't stop corrupt practices. One reader called this week claiming a local gas station was charging more than the sign at the station advertised. The man who called said he didn't realize the price differential until he started pumping gas into his car.

A call to said gas station denied the man's claim, but the report raises some questions. If you noticed similar problems, where stations are advertising different prices than what is being charged, e-mail or call at the number below.

Reassessing a book idea
Audrey Simpson, who has been a vocal advocate against the process of Luzerne County's reassessment, is asking for some help. Simpson, who lives in Kingston Township and has spoken up during county meetings, said she plans to compile a list of property owners' problems with reassessment. She's asking for submissions.

Here's an e-mail Simpson sent:
"After witnessing the unfairness of the reassessment, Audrey Simpson is compiling information from county residents who have been unhappy with their reassessment and appeals process ... She has taken on the task of compiling this information for further use in her fight. If anyone has any questions or would like to see the injustice corrected please send your stories to her at: Audrey Simpson, 72 Green Road, Shavertown, PA 18708. Or call at 570-606-8320."
