TAJIKISTAN TO ACHIEVE ENERGY INDEPENDENCE BY 2009 - PRESIDENT
(Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)DUSHANBE. April 20 (Interfax) - Tajikistan is to achieve energy independence by 2009, and by 2015 will annually produce 80 billion kWh of electricity, Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov said in his annual address to parliament on Thursday.
"Tajikistan will ensure its energy independence by 2009, by launching the Sangtuda Hydroelectric Plant," the president said.
Tajikistan increased electricity production 3.6% year-on-year to 17.1 billion kWh in 2005. The republic also imported 4.5 billion kWh of electricity from Uzbekistan.
The Sangtuda Hydroelectric Plant-1 is being built by a
subsidiary
of Unified Energy System of Russia (RTS: EESR) - Inter RAO UES,
andSangtuda Hydroelectric Plant-2 is being built by Iran. These two plants will produce a total of 3.7 billion kWh of electricity, once fully launched in 2009.
RusAl is also planning to build the Rogun Hydroelectric Plant, with an annual capacity of 13.1 billion kWh.
"By 2015 Tajikistan will produce over 80 billion kWh of electricity per year, if an international energy consortium is set up," the president said.
Tajikistan also has a number of ambitious projects to build large hydro plants on the Pyanj River between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, but there are not yet any investors for these projects.
