TAG Smart Energy Goes Back to the Future(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) ATLANTA, Oct. 21 -- The Technology Association of Georgia issued the following news release: The Technology Association of Georgia's Smart Energy Society will host a luncheon focused on DC Microgrids at Club e in College Park on October 30th. Speakers will include Guerry Waters, Vice President, Oracle Utilities; Sol Haroon, Director of Energy Services, IP Utilinet; and Clemson University Professor Rajendra Singh, a 2014 White House Solar Energy "Champion of Change." Direct Current (DC) microgrids are a system of local power generation using solar, wind or other renewable sources with transmission through an individual's own micro or nanogrid. This concept was originally promoted by Thomas Edison when he commented to Henry Ford, "We are like tenant farmers chopping down the fence around our house for fuel, when we should be using Nature's inexhaustible sources of energy--sun, wind, and tide." Today an individual DC microgrid can run in parallel with the traditional AC (alternating current) grid or in isolation from it. Club e, a business incubator, is completing the installation of their DC microgrid and will be ready to show it off following the luncheon. IP Utilinet helped Famous Joe's of Buford, GA install a DC microgrid. DC microgrids avoid most transmission and distribution losses associated with the AC long-distance transmission system and eliminate the waste associated with conversion from AC to DC. DC power runs many of today's essentials: LED lights, computers, televisions, variable-speed motors and countless other consumer electronics. Some estimate that most of the electricity used in commercial buildings is DC. Attendees of the luncheon will hear experts tell boots-on-the-ground stories about installations in Georgia schools, businesses and homes, hear the electric utility perspective on DC microgrids, understand the policy challenges to widespread adoption and have your questions answered.
