Syracuse University Maxwell School Partners with 2U for Online Executive Master of Public Administration Degree

SYRACUSE, N.Y., April 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and 2U, Inc. (NASDAQ: TWOU), today announced a partnership to launch an online Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) degree.

The Maxwell School's Executive Education program, created in 1964, draws directly on the faculty and curriculum of Maxwell's top-ranked graduate program in public administration and public affairs. Maxwell has enjoyed U.S. News and World Report's top public affairs ranking every year since those surveys began in 1995. More than 10,000 professionals have completed the School's executive master's and midcareer training programs.

ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse is expected to begin classes in July 2017, pending university and state approvals. This is the fifth school at Syracuse to partner with 2U for online offerings, following the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, the School of Information Studies, and the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

The new partnership will combine 2U's advanced learning platform and technology-enabled services with the Maxwell School's diverse, international, and highly collaborative atmosphere, which encourages cross-cultural, interdisciplinary learning among students and faculty, scholars, and practitioners.

"The Maxwell School has been preparing the next generation of leaders for a global community since the School's founding — and the founding of the nation's first MPA — in 1924. It's only fitting that our tradition of innovation and leadership should lead now to an online EMPA to meet the needs of today's professionals," said David Van Slyke, associate dean and chair of the Department of Public Administration and International Affairs at the Maxwell School. "2U supports universities in delivering the highest quality online graduate degree programs that match the impact and outcomes of on-campus programs. Through this partnership, we will expand the reach of a Maxwell degree, to the same end as Maxwell degrees: helping professionals committed to active citizenship and leadership make a difference and transform their communities."

"2U is honored to become part of the Maxwell School's legacy of excellence," said Andrew Hermalyn, 2U executive vice president and regional general manager. "We look forward to partnering with Maxwell's world-class faculty to continue educating and training future global leaders through the online EMPA."

The online program, to be named ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse, will feature live classes taught by Maxwell professors, dynamic course content, and real-world learning experiences. The program will feature a 30-credit curriculum focused on preparing managers for the challenges of leading organizations in the public and nonprofit sectors in the midst of dynamic global change. The degree is designed to assist midcareer professionals in identifying and filling current gaps in their skills or knowledge, preparing for future management and policy challenges, or refocusing their career plans. ExecutiveMPA@Syracuse students must meet the same academic criteria as students in the on-campus program.
