Swearing in is moved up for Modesto's new mayor
Feb 10, 2012 (The Modesto Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A swearing-in ceremony for Modesto's new mayor, and a send-off for the outgoing one, was set for Feb. 28, but there's been a change in plans.
Mayor-elect Garrad Marsh will take the oath of office at the City Council meeting Tuesday. A public reception for Marsh and Jim Ridenour will take place as scheduled at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at the McHenry Museum, at 1402 I St.
Officials were able to move up the swearing-in ceremony after the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters office made fast work of certifying Tuesday's runoff results. The process has taken more than two weeks in the past; it was done within 24 hours this time.
Marsh said he was able get the swearing-in on Tuesday's meeting agenda before it was posted Thursday.
"By the City Charter, what city staff told me, it's the first Tuesday after the vote is certified," Marsh said.
Ridenour said Thursday evening he was OK with leaving office next week.
"I have not had a problem," he said. "I had family coming in for the 28th. They will be here for the reception. I am trying to have some family come in (for Tuesday's ceremony)."
The Feb. 28 reception is for honoring Ridenour for his eight years as mayor and welcoming the new executive. Term limits prevented Ridenour from seeking a third term.
Four months have passed since Marsh's first-place finish by 13 percentage points in the Nov. 8 election. Despite the wide margin, the City Charter required a runoff between Marsh and second-place finisher Brad Hawn, which Marsh handily won by more than 3,400 votes.
