SurfControl Announces Further Advances in Artificial Intelligence, Dynamic Categorization

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- SurfControl (LSE:SRF), a leading provider of global on-demand, network and endpoint IT security solutions today announced three new versions of Virtual Content Agent, a neural network based dynamic categorization agent.

Recent advances in neural network tuning and neural net training infrastructure have allowed SurfControl to produce new versions of Virtual Content Agent optimized for French, Italian, and English with significant improvements tuned to increase the effectiveness of all of its content categories. Virtual Content Agent is an added-value component to enhance SurfControl's categorization database and provides a categorization even if a site is too new to be in the database.

"In our market, companies need both technological innovation and reductions in the costs to serve," said Max Rayner, executive vice-president of products and services at SurfControl. "We are really pleased to note that we have reduced the time and cost to train our neural networks by a factor of 6, enabling us to meet demand for an increasing array of local language versions at much lower costs."

SurfControl also announced the development of SurfBayes, a next-generation Bayesian-inspired categorization engine with greater accuracy at faster speeds than leading competitive solutions. Bayesian filtering is a popular mechanism to distinguish illegitimate spam email from legitimate email.

"With SurfBayes, we have developed technology that provides content categorization in about a millisecond and at accuracies that beat our competitors in side by side trials," said Rayner. "This will initially help us automate the continuous categorization of tens of millions of URLs at a greatly reduced cost, and soon find its way into dynamic categorization offerings to provide competitive advantage in cases requiring ultra-low-latency such as ISPs, cellular carriers, and our own WebDefense on-demand service."
