Stonyford Rodeo kicks off Saturday

Apr 29, 2009 (Colusa County Sun-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Hundreds of spectators will be heading up the hill Saturday as the western Colusa County community of Stonyford kicks off its annual two-day rodeo.

Bull riders, steer wrestlers and calf ropers are all expected for the Stony Creek Horsemen's Association's 66th annual event.

"The Stony Creek Horsemen's Association members have been busy getting everything ready," said Mary Quiberg, assistant secretary. "The Association has added additional purse money for each pro rodeo event and it looks like this helped us to attract a great slate of professional riders." Billed the "biggest little pro rodeo in the West," the Stonyford Rodeo will include events such as bull riding, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, team roping, women's barrel racing, and the ever popular amateur event of Mutton Busting.

Quality rodeo stock is being furnished again this year by Growney Brothers Stock Contractors. Popular rodeo announcer Don Jesser is also returning.

This year's specialty act features rodeo clown Troy Lerwill, known as "The Wild Child." Lerwill was the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association comedy act of the year for 2005-2007 and has received numerous awards over the last few years, Quinberg said.

Rodeo weekend officially begins with the rodeo dinner Friday night at the Stonyford Community Hall. The Stonyford Grange sponsors the event and a rodeo breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning.

Saturday's parade begins at 10 a.m. and will proceed from Indian Valley Elementary School north of town to the rodeo grounds. There is no cost to attend.

Parade entries include the sheriff's posse and junior posse, Elk Creek 4-H and the Corkhill Wild Bunch.

"We usually have about 50 entries," said parade organizer Maudrie Smith. "It always turns out to be a great parade." The rodeo parade theme this year is "Rawhide and Rodeo." Grand Marshals are Darrel and Rete Dalton A highlight of the parade each year is the Flag of Heroes presentation to honor firefighters killed during the attacks Sept. 11, 2001.

The rodeo begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with the grand entry of Rodeo Queen Alyssa Skinner and her court: first runner up Krissy Wilson, Tracy Harvey, Clair Crites and Nicky Phillips.
