State College Previews: Texas A&M-Commerce at Northeastern State

(Tulsa World (OK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Oct. 4--When: 3 p.m. Saturday

Where: Doc Wadley Stadium.

Records: NSU 0-5, 0-1 LSC North. A&M-Commerce 2-3, 0-1 LSC North.

Last Week: NSU must be wondering what it takes to win. Against East Central, the RiverHawks set school records for passing yardage and touchdown passes and still lost 55-49 in overtime. Jared Homer had a field goal blocked in OT, and it was picked up by Dionte Dean who rambled 21 yards before relaying to Ryan Madison for the final 52 yards and the winning score. Commerce lost 21-13 to Central Oklahoma despite 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery from linebacker Andrew Gamboa.

Outlook: The RiverHawks finally broke loose offensively last week and again lost on the defensive side against East Central. Quarterback Kaelin Woods completed 21-of-34 passes for 425 yards and five touchdowns, setting school marks for passing yards, total offense and tying the record for TD passes. Three receivers had more than 100 yards, while Prince McKinney ran for 114 yards and two TDs. However, the NSU defense allowed ECU quarterback Marcus Johnson to also throw for a school-record 426 yards. Something must be done to shore up the defense if

the RiverHawks are going to win.

Key Matchups: Commerce is another team that lives on the pass. If NSU can stop wide receiver Willie Thornton, it may have a chance to win. Thornton has 22 catches for 509 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 101.8 yards receiving per game. He also is a potentially dangerous punt returner. Quarterbacks Terry Mayo and Trent Miller have combined for 1,042 passing yards as Commerce and its opponents each have 1,510 yards in total offense for the year. Defensively, the Lions have 17 sacks this season, making protecting Woods a necessity.
