Spiva Law Group of Georgia and Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm of Texas March Together to Expand Heads In Helmets Head Injury Prevention and Safety Program Throughout the United States by Giving Away Thousands of Safety Helmets

Two U.S. law firms have taken their campaign to promote awareness of the serious issue of head injuries among children literally to the streets - and to parks, community health organizations, schools, churches and festivals in Georgia and Texas over the past several years. Combined, these two law firms have distributed approximately 15,000 free safety helmets - custom-fitting each child with the help of a lawyer, legal assistant or volunteer as part of the Heads In Helmets safety program.

Through a series of public events last month that included marching together in St. Patrick's Day parades in the greater Savannah area, representatives of Spiva Law Group (www.spivalaw.com) and Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm (www.sloanfirm.com and www.sloanfirmhouston.com) are demonstrating their solid leadership and deep commitment to the cause of preventing traumatic brain injuries in children. Focused on the opportunity to elevate the Heads In Helmets campaign to a national level, Spiva Law Group and The Sloan Firm are working together to recruit and train other law firms in the United States. Their mission: to equip even more children with free safety helmets and help parents, guardians, teachers, coaches and youth leaders reduce the risks of ead injuries that can lead to death or disability.

Howard Spiva of Spiva Law Group established The Justice 4 Children Foundation and the Heads In Helmets safety program (www.headsinhelmets.com) in Savannah in 1999. The Sloan Firm became the first Heads In Helmets national ambassador in 2013. Children aged 4 to 14 are the primary audience for the helmets and must be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian to receive a free safety helmet. Staff members and volunteers affiliated with The Sloan Firm and Spiva Law Group ensure that each child receives a custom fit to maximize safety and comfort.

According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), the two age groups at greatest risk for traumatic brain injury are ages 0-4 and 15-19. According CDC statistics shared on the Brain Injury Association of America Web site (www.biausa.org), traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of disability and death in children and adolescents in the U.S. An estimated 2.4 million children and adults in the U.S. sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and another 795,000 individuals sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) from non-traumatic causes each year. Currently more than 5.3 million children and adults in the U.S. live with a lifelong disability as a result of TBI and an estimated 1.1 million have a disability due to stroke.

"The Heads In Helmets mission is to make safety helmets cool so that kids will wear them. The Savannah community at large has embraced Spiva Law Group and Justice 4 Children Foundation - and now also the Sloan Law Firm. Parents and community leaders familiar with our Heads In Helmets program know that we are focused on making kids safer," said Spiva, who believes that children should wear safety helmets not only when they ride bikes but also when they ride in cars. "I am actively seeking out other law firms throughout the U.S. that are willing and able to assist us in reaching even more children and their parents."

"The Sloan Firm has gained the positive reputation as 'those lawyers who give out free safety helmets to kids,'" commented Kevin Fullen, firm administrator for Sloan, Bagley, Hatcher & Perry Law Firm. "We have gladly spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours custom-fitting children in the heat, cold and rain at our Texas events. We have aligned with police departments, children's museums, festivals, health fairs and back to school events to equip Texas kids with free helmets. Parents always express their gratitude and typically are surprised that our firm gives these helmets away free of charge."

The Sloan Firm won top honors in the Best Public Health/Safety Initiative category of PR Daily's 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Awards for its Heads In Helmets community outreach program. Spiva Law Group has won 12 awards, with some of them being the 2011 Reader's Choice Award from Savannah Morning News, the 2011 Outstanding Service to the Community Award from Savannah Bar Association, the 2011 Community Service Award from Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, and the 2011 Home Town Hero Award from WTOC TV.
