Spaniard resigns from U.N. counter-terrorism post

(EFE News Service Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) The Spaniard Javier Ruperez presented Friday his resignation as head of the U.N. Counter-Terrorism Committee's executive directorate in a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

In the letter, to which Efe had access, Ruperez expressed his satisfaction for having had "the honor and the privilege to work for the United Nationals for three years," but did not specify the reasons for his leaving.

Javier Ruperez, who in the letter expressed his intention of leaving his post on June 30, was the highest ranking Spaniard in the United Nations.

The Spanish diplomat's resignation comes seven months before the Security Council at the end of the year decides on the future of the committee that he has led for the last three years.

The executive directorate of the Counter-Terrorism Committee was created in 2004 by then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan, with a term extending until next Dec. 31.

The Security Council must decide at then end of that time whether to extend the term, dismantle the committee or incorporate it into other agencies of the United Nations.
