Sony completes acquisition of Sony Ericsson

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Feb. 16 -- (Kyodo) _ Sony Corp. said Thursday it has completed the acquisition of the 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson mobile phone joint venture held by Sweden's Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson, making the company its wholly owned subsidiary.

In line with the acquisition, Sony will rename the London-based company Sony Mobile Communications AB later this month, the Japanese electronics company said.

Through the deal, Sony aims to enhance its electronics business by further integrating its smartphone business with its lineup of other network enabled products such as tablet computers, television and personal computers, it said.

Sony and Ericsson founded the joint venture in 2001 to integrate their mobile phone divisions.
