Snowbank foils burglar

Jan 08, 2013 (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WATERLOO, Iowa -- An alleged burglar ran into problems with his escape when his getaway car got stuck in the snow.

Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies arrested Gary Duane Goings, 43, of Altoona, on Sunday at the jail for second-degree burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, seven counts of third-degree burglary and operating a vehicle without owner's consent.

Bond was set at $50,000.

Court records allege Goings broke into sheds and storage buildings and then took another person's pickup truck, apparently in an attempt to pull his vehicle from a snowbank, before giving up and driving off.

The case began to unfold in the early morning hours of Dec. 20 when a resident at 12015 La Porte Road discovered his pickup had been stolen from his machine shed.

Deputies tracked footprints from the shed across the street to storage buildings at 12108 La Porte where they found a car stuck in a snowbank. A piece of broken tow strap was hanging from the back of the car.

Inside the car, they found a cell phone and items that had been removed from the storage units, including a shotgun. Investigators determined the phone and the car belonged to Goings, according to court records.

The missing pickup truck was later found parked in a Waterloo neighborhood where Goings has friends, records state. It had a tow chain hanging from its rear.
