Small Communities Rally Big Support for Schools in U.S. Cellular's $1 Million Giveaway
CHICAGO, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Proving size doesn't matter when it comes to community spirit, schools from smaller towns crowd the leader board this week in U.S. Cellular's Calling All Communities campaign. The program, which will award $100,000 to 10 schools, challenges towns from across the country to rally together to give the schools of their choice a chance to share $1 million.
Since the program's Dec. 3 launch, thousands have visited U.S. Cellular stores to cast their votes. So far, half of the 20 schools with the most votes are from communities with fewer than 5,000 residents.
"Times are tough for schools everywhere and these small communities are doing an impressive job of working together to bring these much-needed funds to their districts," said Karen Ehlers, vice president of public affairs and communications for U.S. Cellular. "There is still plenty of time for the tables to turn as word continues to spread that every school -- large and small -- has a real chance to win if they pull together and believe in something better for their children's education."
The votes are pouring in and the leading school has received 93 votes. Schools currently in the lead are Illini West High School in Carthage, Ill.; Woodland High School in Fairfax, Okla.; Algona Community School in Algona, IA; St. Joseph High School in Kenosha, Wis.; Central Community School in Dewitt, IA; Sigourney High School in Sigourney, IA; St. Matthews K-12 in Glendale Heights, Ill.; Canton High School in Canton, Ill.; Nehosho Rapids Elementary School in Nehosho Rapids, Kan.; Kuemper Catholic School in Carroll, IA; Assumption High School in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Thayer K-12 in Thayer, Miss.; Reynolds Grade School in Reynolds, Ill.; Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville, Kan.; Chelsea High School in Chelsea, Okla.; West Central High School in Biggsville, Ill.; Lewiston Elementary School in Lewiston, Ill.; Liberty School CUSD #2 in Liberty, Ill.; McCinn County High School in Athens, Tenn. and Washington High School in Washington, N.C.
To vote for a school in your community, visit any U.S. Cellular store before Jan. 15, 2009 for a postage-paid postcard ballot. All schools in the U.S., public and private, serving kindergarten through high school are eligible for the award, which will be announced in February 2009. No purchase is necessary to vote. The top 20 leading schools will be posted weekly at participating U.S. Cellular stores and at uscellular.com/callingallcommunities.
