Sequans Demonstrating LTE CAT 0 Technology at CTIA's Super Mobility Week

Sequans Communications S.A. (NYSE: SQNS), a leader in LTE (News - Alert) for IoT chipsets, is powering an LTE CAT 0 technology demonstration at CTIA's Super Mobility Week, taking place September 9-11 in Las Vegas. CAT 0 (category 0) refers to the lower throughput level (1 Mbps) defined in the next release of the 3GPP LTE standard, Release 12.* After taking the lead in the LTE for IoT marketplace by becoming the first LTE chipset maker to deliver and certify an LTE CAT 1 chipset that is already inside new M2M devices, Sequans is showing its newest innovations in LTE for machine type communications (LTE MTC).

For the demonstration at Super Mobility Week, created in partnership with Ericsson (News - Alert), Sequans is using a software-modified version of its Calliope CAT 1 LTE platform, to demonstrate Release 12, CAT 0 features. These include half-duplex operation and reduced peak throughput, both of which result in lower cost, smaller footprint modules and reduced power consumption.

"We are showing Release 12, CAT 0 capabilities via software modifications to our Calliope CAT 1 chip for the purposes of this public demonstration. In parallel, we are developing Release 12/CAT 0 and Release 13/CAT M platforms that will be fully optimized in both software and hardware since this is the only way to take full advantage of the Release 12 and 13 specifications and reach the very low price points envisioned for LTE MTC," said Georges Karam (News - Alert), Sequans CEO.

"The work we've done to develop CAT 0 for the demonstration at Super Mobility Week lays the groundwork to begin trialing CAT 0 capabilities with leading operators, in a way similar to what we did with CAT 1 technology last year, conducting CAT 1 network and device trials with Verizon Wireless and other operators.

"Our CAT 1 Calliope LTE platform, available today and based on existing 3GPP standards, is the first LTE chipset platform in the industry to meet low cost and low power LTE MTC requirements. It is certified by Verizon (News - Alert) Wireless and has won two industry awards for IoT innovation. Calliope will continue to be suitable for a wide range of IoT and M2M applications that require CAT 1 (10 Mbps) throughput, such as in security, industrial monitoring, healthcare, and vehicle telematics. Our coming CAT 0 and CAT M solutions will extend the viability of LTE connectivity even further - to the very smallest and lowest power devices - so that it can truly be the low cost connectivity solution for the vast Internet of Things."

* Note to editors:
The next two releases of 3GPP's LTE standard, releases 12 and 13, further enhance LTE MTC. 3GPP Release 12, which was frozen earlier this year, introduces CAT 0 (category 0) throughput (1 Mbps), single receive chain and half-duplex operation, all of which reduce cost and power consumption compared to the existing standard. Release 13, expected to conclude later this year, introduces a further reduction in peak throughput, category M (CAT M) along with link enhancements, and further reductions in complexity that are designed to make LTE viable for even the most cost- and power-sensitive MTC applications.
