Sedro-Woolley sees an increase in burglaries

Feb 10, 2012 (Skagit Valley Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SEDRO-WOOLLEY -- Sedro-Woolley police are looking for the culprits behind a string of burglaries at area homes since the beginning of this year.

Lt. Lin Tucker said 31 burglaries reported this year share similarities in the location where they're occurring and the items taken.

"This was enough that it spiked our interest," he said.

Sometimes the area has seen a surge of four to five burglaries a day, followed by several quiet days, Tucker said.

Most of the burglaries are taking place in the areas of North Reed, North Central and North Ball streets, mainly during regular working hours on weekdays, Tucker said.

Some victims have reported strangers knocking on their doors. If a resident answers, the wouldbe burglar will go away, but if no one answers, burglars may try to find easy access into the home by kicking in a door, reaching through a window or finding an unlocked point of entry, Tucker said. The burglars also are reportedly traveling by foot.

Items typically taken include flat-screen TVs, video game consoles, laptop computers and other easily transportable home electronics.

Tucker suspects the items are being sold or traded for drugs or cash.

The police department does not yet know how many people may be involved in the burglaries, nor do they have any leads or suspects.

"We're kind of casting a wide net out," Tucker said. "The only way we're going to be able to catch somebody is with someone's tip." Sedro-Woolley police advise residents to be on the lookout for suspicious individuals knocking door-to-door who don't appear to be connected to a legitimate business or organization.

The Sedro-Woolley Police Department can be contacted at 360-855-0111.
