Search and rescue team hunts for man, 38: Robert Hatley last seen Tuesday night in Twin Lakes
Jun 27, 2009 (The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The search for a Hernando man who disappeared Tuesday night was turned over to the DeSoto County Search and Rescue Squad Friday morning.
"We had a meeting at the sheriff's office and decided to turn the entire search over to the search and rescue squad," said Lt. Scott Evans of the Horn Lake Police Department.
Robert Hatley, 38, of Hernando, who has a medical condition requiring medication to avoid spells of disorientation and seizures, was reportedly last seen about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday on Iroquois in the Twin Lakes subdivision.
The search and rescue unit, aided by DeSoto County Emergency Services, set up a command post on Miss. 301 south of Nail Road and intensified the search efforts on either side of Miss. 301, between Goodman Road and Church Road.
Altogether, the primary search area covers more than 1,300 acres and several area lakes and ponds.
"We received a tip from a woman who reported seeing him walking east on Nail Wednesday morning," Sheriff Bill Rasco said Friday.
He said the woman reported seeing Hatley in response to new media accounts that Hatley was missing.
On Friday afternoon, a flip flop identified by family members as belonging to Hatley was found on Nail Road near the entrance to the Kingsview Lakes subdivision.
Tim Curtis, deputy director of emergency management, directed a search of the lakes in Kingsview Lakes, as well as a riding patrol by searchers on four-wheelers through the subdivision and the surrounding property.
"We're making progress in eliminating places he might be," Curtis said.
Still, the searchers were hampered by extreme heat and by ticks and insects in the search area, much of which is heavily overgrown. Temperatures Friday afternoon hovered near 100 degrees in the search area.
Meanwhile, Evans said Horn Lake police have continued to check for any use of Hatley's credit cards and debit cards since his disappearance.
"We have blanketed all the local convenience stores and there has been absolutely no action on his cards," he said Friday. "The last time he had used a card was at a convenience store in Hernando on Tuesday night."
Evans said family members told investigators that it would have been unlikely that Hatley would have had more than $10 in cash with him when he disappeared.
He said police have also checked with stores where Hatley had shopped before his disappearance.
"In several of the videos, he seems distressed, looking down and grimacing, maybe like he doesn't feel right," Evans said.
