Scopus Increases Footprint in Romanian Direct-To-Home Market With New DCS Win

TEL AVIV, Israel, August 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Scopus Video Networks , a provider of digital video networking solutions, today announced that Digital Cable System (DCS), the third-largest cable and DTH operator in Romania, has selected Scopus' digital broadcast platforms for an expansion of its direct-to-home service (MAX TV). In this contract, Scopus is deploying a fourth transponder system in DCS' Bucharest headends.

DCS' new system is composed of IVG-7100 Intelligent Video Gateway platforms, IRD-2900 Integrated Receiver Decoders, statistically multiplexed encoder systems, and Network Management System software. The versatile ASI/IP-based IVG platforms provide advanced video processing capabilities including Joint Transrating(TM), grooming, and bit-rate shaping for better bandwidth utilization.

"Scopus' systems have enabled us to enhance our capabilities and realize the ambitious goals we set when we founded DCS in 2005," said Mihai Springer, CTO at DCS. "We have been extremely satisfied with the reliability of the systems that Scopus supplied us a year ago, as well as with their professional support. It was a natural choice for us to select them again for the expansion of our headends."

"DCS' choice of our solution is another important vote of confidence that reflects our team's ability to supply our customers with the solution they are seeking," said Shimon Shanor, vice president of sales for Scopus. "Romania remains a strong and growing market for us, as we continue to cement our presence there."

About DCS
Digital Cable System (DCS), the third-largest cable and DTH (Direct-to-Home) operator in Romania, focuses on providing DTH satellite TV services, cable, Internet, and in the future VoIP services. When founded in 2005, DCS included about 30 Romanian TV cable companies, which had been active for five to 10 years. Now it includes over 40 companies.

DCS launched MAX TV platform, a Digital Cable System product, on 1st July 2005. It is a satellite reception system including a selection of subscription-based channels.

MAX TV broadcasts 50 channels on two transponders from Sirius 2 and one on Eutelsat W2. Using simulcrypt with other channels on HOTBIRD, its offerings are increasing and will continue to grow using also this direction.

A key component in the success of the MAX TV platform is its different way of operation. DCS built two uplink stations in different sites at Buftea at Mediapro Studios and ICPE in Bucharest to ensure redundancy in case of flaw or bad weather conditions. It is the only DTH platform with uplink on two satellites - Sirius2 and Eutelsat W2 - with great neighborhood of Hotbird satellites and also the only one using two conditional access systems - Viaccess and Conax.

The channels offer an additional 500 channels with no additional costs. It is the only open platform - DCS uses Viaccess as a conditional access system and lets subscribers choose from a large variety of receivers. Another key component of its success is its countrywide distribution network with more than 600 dealers all over the country.

DCS also uses the MAX TV platform's digital channels for distributing to the local cable networks, which can thereby provide their subscribers digital content at a very good price.

"Entertainment services enter a new dimension these days. Starting today, TV viewers can enjoy their favorite shows anywhere through direct, wireless satellite access. This is part of our efforts to meet the needs of people living in remote areas who cannot be reached by terrestrial means. We also think about people on the move who want to stay informed and have access to entertainment wherever they are," said Gheorghe Minea, DCS' Chairman.
