Sauk Rapids school district puts meeting materials online
SAUK RAPIDS, Feb 13, 2012 (St. Cloud Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Materials for Sauk Rapids-Rice school board meetings are available on the district's website.
The district is making the switch at no additional cost. The materials were available online for the first time for tonight's school board work session.
Superintendent Dan Bittman said the board has been working to better engage the community in district activities. Making the materials available online is part of that, he said.
"We have learned from stakeholders that online is preferred," Bittman said,
School board members will be able to use iPads paid for through a grant in 2011 to access the materials during the meetings, or use their own laptops, Bittman said. Students will use the iPads during the day.
The district is using Moodle, an open source management system, to make the documents available. The district already uses Moodle as a tool to create websites for students.
Bittman said the change will save money in paper, postage and staff time. He did not know how much the district spends a month creating and mailing board packets.
The materials should be available no later than 5 p.m. on Friday before the Monday board meeting,
St. Cloud school district has made its school board materials available online since March 2010. Rocori has made the agendas available to the public and the materials to the board only for more than a year.
Sartell-St. Stephen has been talking about making a switch to paperless meetings.
