Samsung Mobile launches Samsung Wave in Canada
Jul 08, 2010 (TELECOMWORLDWIRE via COMTEX) --
Mobile phone provider Samsung Mobile announced on Thursday the
availability in Canada of the Samsung Wave (model S8500), the first
smartphone to leverage bada, Samsung's new smartphone platform.
In addition, the Wave is the first Canadian smartphone to feature
Samsung's Super AMOLED screen technology, providing users with improved
outdoor visibility, reduced power consumption and high picture clarity.
Samsung said its bada platform enables applications to fully utilise
the hardware by providing various APIs for interactivity, including UI
elements, 3D Graphics, Flash, multipoint-touch, sensors and motion
support. In addition, the platform offers service-oriented features
such as social network integration, LBS (location-based service) and
in-application-purchase.
Developers can write applications with the bada SDK (Software
Development Kit), which provides a set of Application Programming
Interfaces (APIs) as well as IDE (Integrated Development Environment),
simulator, UI builder, as well as other tools and sample applications
and documents.
To motivate developers, the company has created a global contest called
the bada Developer Challenge and has set aside a prize pot totalling
USD2,700,000 for the event. The final contest winner will receive
USD300,000. The SDK can be downloaded for free from
http://developer.bada.com.
The new handset also offers Samsung Apps, an integrated application
store accessible from the device and online, which allows users to
easily download a wide range of applications.
In addition, the phone features a 1GHz processor; tempered glass
display with anti-smudge technology; multi-codec support for DivX,
Xvid, MP4 and WMV and support for virtual 5.1 surround sound; HD video
(720p) decoding and recording capabilities; as well as Bluetooth 3.0
and Wi-Fi 802.11n standards.
The handset also offers Social Hub, which provides unified access to
e-mails, IMs and Social Networking Sites (SNS). It is powered by 'Push'
technology, ensuring a real time delivery of e-mails, IMs, calendar
events and SNS updates.
The Samsung WAVE is available from operators Bell Mobility and Rogers.
No pricing details were disclosed.
