Safe containing potassium cyanide stolen from Chiba factory

(Mainichi Daily News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)KAMOGAWA, Chiba -- A safe containing a bottle of potassium cyanide and roughly 300,000 yen in cash was stolen from a factory here, police said on Monday.

Kamogawa Police Station received a call from a 47-year-old man at the "Kaneko Seisakusho" equipment factory in Kamogawa at about 7:50 p.m. on Monday, saying, a safe had been stolen.

The safe, measuring about 80 centimeters tall and 50 centimeters wide, was taken from an office on the first floor of the factory. It contained a bottle of potassium cyanide and about 300,000 yen in cash.

Investigators said a glasscutter or similar tool had been used to break through the door of the factory, and the lock was subsequently opened. The theft apparently occurred after 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the last workers left the building.

The factory produces elevator parts and other equipment, and the potassium cyanide had formerly been used for welding, but it had been shut in the safe since 1998 without being used. (Mainichi) [Mainichi Daily News / February 06]
