Safaricom Lowers Calling Charges

Nairobi, Oct 16, 2008 (The Nation/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) --
The pricing war in the local telecommunication industry went up a notch higher on Wednesday with Safaricom reducing all its charges to more than a third for within-network calls.

In its new offer running for next two months, the listed firm's subscribers will enjoy a reduced rate of between Sh3 and Sh8 per minute from the current Sh10 per minute. Calls to its rivals went down by almost half from Sh25 to Sh14 per minute.

In what was a clear answer to its competitors that have over the last five weeks launched cheaper calling rates, Safaricom launched "Jibambie" a tariff charging depending on the amount of money a subscriber loads onto their cellphone.

"The market has become competitive over the last few months. We have seen the launch of Orange Mobile and a more aggressive Zain," Safaricom chief executive, Michael Joseph said.

Subscribers topping up with Sh1000 airtime will see their calls attract a lower charge of Sh3 per minute while those topping up with Sh500 will pay Sh4 per minute. Top-ups of Sh100, Sh50, and Sh20 will attract calling rates of shilling six, seven, and eight per minute respectively.

Late last month Zain launched the country's cheapest tariff across networks christened "Vuka" at Sh8 per minute.

Closely following Zain's launch was Orange Mobile, Telkom Kenya's cellular phone brand name, with a Sh1 per minute tariff, although only available for call within its network.

The competition is expected to intensify with the expected coming of Econet Wireless set for end next month.

The launch of Safaricom's offer coincided with its netting of the 12th million subscriber two weeks ago.

Post-paid subscribers will also enjoy lower charges of Sh7 per minute for those spending Sh5,000 or less per month and Sh6 for those exceeding Sh5,000.
