Sacramento plans forum tonight on train depot remodeling

Nov 15, 2012 (The Sacramento Bee - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The city of Sacramento will hold a public workshop tonight to receive comments from residents and commuters on the second phase of the Sacramento Valley Station project.

The workshop is scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Stanford Gallery, 111 I St. in Old Sacramento.

The downtown depot renovation is part of the project to create a transit hub in Sacramento to serve all modes of travel, according to a city news release.

The workshop will include a brief presentation about the project at 5:30 p.m. An open house format will follow with opportunities for the public to view illustrations, meet the design team and provide ideas and comment on several areas of interest, including: -- Station access improvements for all modes of travel.

-- Station enhancements for commuters and long-distance travelers.

-- The retail and office mix, and other potential and private uses.

The multimodal project moved a step closer to reality in June when the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $15 million grant to the city toward a $30 million renovation of the historic 86-year-old depot. The 20th century building serves 1.2 million travelers a year.

Construction to rehabilitate the building, including renovation of the waiting room and restrooms, addition of office and retail space, and new wiring, plumbing and fixtures, will start next summer. Reinforcing the structure to withstand earthquakes is under way as a separate project and will be completed next summer.
