S. Korea to export ground-based digital broadcasting to Saudi Arabia
DAEJEON, Nov 20, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
South Korea's state-run telecommunications research institute said Wednesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to export a ground-based mobile broadband service to Saudi Arabia.
The terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) agreement with Saudi communications service provider TMAS is expected to give South Korea a valuable springboard into the Middle East region, the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said.
Seoul has been pursuing T-DMB as a potential growth engine for the telecommunications industry, which is nearing saturation in South Korea and needs new services to stimulate growth and demand.
The cutting-edge technology allows users to watch TV on various handheld mobile devices while on the move. South Korea started nationwide services last year.
"There has been high interest shown around the world for South Korea's T-DMB technology," ETRI President Choi Mun-ki said. He added that every effort will be made to grab more of the global market in this lucrative field.
The executive said that through T-DMB, the country could export other related technologies, including Internet protocol television and WiBro.
The Daejeon-based laboratory said DMBworld Co. will be tasked with the technology export and working with the Saudi partner.
