Russia to launch U.S. telecom satellite

(UPI International Top News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A U.S. telecommunications satellite was set Sunday to be launched into space from Kazakhstan by the Russian space agency, officials said.

Roscosmos said that a Zenit rocket would take the Intelsat-15 spacecraft into orbit at midnight Sunday Moscow time, RIA Novosti reported.

The news agency said a Zenit-3SLB rocket would be used in the launch, described as a modernized three-stage version of the Zenit-3SL previously used for sea launches from Russia's floating platform in the Pacific Ocean.

Officials said the Intelsat-15, developed by Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Va., was built to replace the Intelsat-709 satellite and is equipped with 22 Ku-band transponders to provide telecommunications services for the Middle East and Russia.
