Robert Copp Named Westinghouse Project Director, Hematite Decommissioning Project

Westinghouse Electric Company has named Robert (Bob) D. Copp as project director for the Hematite Decommissioning Project (HDP), an initiative to clean up, decommission and complete license retirement in a safe and environmentally appropriate manner of the former Hematite fuel fabrication facility. The facility manufactured uranium fuel for the U.S. Government (including the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Department of Energy) and commercial electric power utilities.
Copp will be responsible for all project operations at the Festus, Missouri, decommissioning site and will lead the planning, mobilization and execution of the detailed HDP project plan. Copp will also proactively maintain communications with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and local government/community organizations.
Copp has more than 40 years of nuclear facility safety, design and decommissioning experience, which includes serving as site director for decommissioning of the Dungeness A and Hinkley Point A nuclear power stations in the U.K.; manager of a high-technology wastewater treatment construction project at the Hanford Nuclear Laboratory in the state of Washington; manager of a plutonium restart project at the Rocky Flats Environmental Site in Colorado; and safety analysis expert at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine. Most recently, Copp served as chief executive officer of Nitrocision LLC of Idaho Falls, Idaho (USA), a supplier of a liquid nitrogen cleaning and cutting tool.
Westinghouse became the owner of the Hematite site following the purchase of the nuclear operations of ABB in April 2000. The Hematite facility was the oldest nuclear fuel manufacturing facility in the U.S. when Westinghouse ceased fuel manufacturing operations in June 2001. The NRC recently approved the site's decommissioning plan in November 2011 and site work now under way includes excavating waste burial areas, removing contaminated soil and shipping the material for off-site disposal. This phase of site operations is expected to be completed in 2013.
