Roaming Messenger Eyes Hot Market for BlackBerry, Palm Treo and Other Smart Phones; With 2.6 Billion Mobile Phones Worldwide by 2009, Gartner Forecasts Smart Phones to Be Fastest Growing Category

Recent reports about the exponential growth of worldwide mobile phone sales offer telling signs of the market opportunities ahead.
According to research reports by Gartner, the world's appetite for mobile phones has exceeded even the most optimistic expectations -- reaching an astounding number of 2.6 billion mobile phones worldwide by 2009. Gartner identifies that smartphones such as BlackBerrys, Palm Treos, Microsoft, Symbian and Linux based phones are the fastest growing category of device.
In the first two quarters of 2005, Palm shipped over 1,000,000 Treos and Research In Motion shipped closed to 2 million BlackBerrys. Both companies doubled their shipments in the same period last year. Market researcher Canalys said 12.2 million smart phones were shipped in the second quarter of 2005 alone, also doubling the shipments from the same quarter a year ago. Sales are made to new users and the market continues to expand without apparent limits.
A separate report released by Gartner this week shows that US spending on information technology is on the rise in 2006. Spending on security and storage segments will level off in 2006, while mobile devices will become a major purchasing priority. Development tools and middleware will also attract investment. This finding is based on a survey of 1,500 IT managers' plans for next year.
