Jamaica's telecom infrastructure is relatively advanced by Caribbean
standards and boasts one of the highest mobile penetration rates in the
region. In contrast, Jamaican fixed-line teledensity, currently
experiencing a downward trend, is one of the lowest in the Caribbean.
Despite liberalisation and the award of numerous licences, Cable &
Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ) continues to dominate fixed-lines in an
environment in which Local Loop Unbundling still remains on the drawing
board. Mobile telephony, on the other hand, has experienced a
remarkable boom since the market was opened to competition, resulting
in approximately six mobile phones for every fixed line in service.
Although broadband household penetration is still relatively modest, it
witnessed strong growth between 2004 and 2006. In addition, recent
investments in wireless and cable broadband, together with the launch
of two new submarine fibre-optic cables, are expected to put downward
pressure on broadband access prices and to drive broadband growth
during 2007 and 2008. This report provides an overview of the country's
