In this issue of Signals Ahead we discuss the changes that are required in the network to support VoLTE, in particular VoLTE roaming. We examine the 4 basic network architectures (3 LBO, plus home routing), explain how they work, and the pros and cos of each architecture. Although none of the architectures is perfect, to us at least one approach makes far more sense than the others. Further, it doesn't hurt to remind the industry that 3G voice (CSFB) is a more than acceptable solution for international voice roaming and that whatever decision is ultimately made regarding VoLTE roaming, it is one that everyone will need to accept and live with for the next 25 years. At one time, WiMAX was readily available and operators could have deployed it instead of waiting for LTE (News - Alert) to mature.
