Comes with Success? Nokia's Bid to Lead in the Mobile Music Sector
In September 2008, Nokia unveiled its "Comes With Music" (CWM) products
and services. This offering -- the first of its kind -- combines a
12-month unlimited music download subscription, compatible devices
(5800 XpressMusic, N95 8GB) featuring an embedded music player and
enhanced user access to music files, a dedicated application to
transfer music from PC to mobile phone, and unlimited access to the
music catalogue of four of the leading record labels (Universal Music
Group, Sony BMG Entertainment, Warner Music and EMI) as well as
independent labels. The Comes With Music scheme was launched in the UK
in September and will be introduced in European and Asian markets in
early 2009.
Attack is the best defense, and CWM is clearly one of Nokia's responses
to the iPhone threat. But beyond the iPhone threat, a much wider goal
is at stake: the dominance of the mobile music market. With CWM, Nokia
challenges not only Apple but also all the operators that have for
years tried to position their mobile music services, with relatively
little success. Has Nokia found the right recipe to finally make mobile
music a mass-market reality? Or will it fail like previous endeavors?
We believe that Nokia today has the best cards in hand to succeed in
mobile music. Comes With Music will benefit from the timing of its
introduction, from Nokia's clout in the market and from its designs and
features.
