Visiting students experience a week of Fukushima's "now."

Fukushima Prefecture invited students from University College London (UCL) to the prefecture for a visit from Tuesday, March 8 through Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in an effort to dispel disparaging rumors about Fukushima that persist in foreign countries while ensuring that memories of the disaster are not abandoned with the passage of time.

The evacuation order has been lifted for the town of Naraha, and upon hearing accounts of events that occurred at the time of the disaster some students were moved to tears. At the Agricultural Technology Centre, representatives from the hosting prefecture imparted knowledge on the radioactive material inspection system that safeguards agricultural and marine products produced in the prefecture, while also advancing a more profound awareness of current conditions in Fukushima, or Fukushima's "now."

During a visit to the prefectural governor on the last day of the students' visit, students declared, "Actually coming to Fukushima in person dramatically changed our perspective. We intend to relay all that we saw, heard, and experienced here to our friends at school and families. We also plan to describe our experiences on the school's blog so more people will yearn to visit Fukushima." This demonstrated the remarkable change in their perceptions between before and after visiting Fukushima.

This was a week of profound changes in people's impression of Fukushima, precipitated by the opportunity to directly convey to UCL students the conditions and reconstruction progress in Fukushima.
