Reneo, Orange Silicon Valley and Echostreams Showcase the Future of Hyper-Efficient General Purpose Computational Storage Cluster

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --(Business Wire)--

Today, Silicon Valley based stealth mode start-up, Reneo, with its partner, Orange (News - Alert) Silicon Valley, a wholly owned innovation subsidiary of global telecommunications operator Orange, and Echostreams, an OEM/ODM solution platform provider, is reinventing data processing with a low power cluster at SuperComputing 2014, Booth# 959. The demonstration, based on a scalable architecture, uses 96 NVIDIA (News - Alert) Jetson TK1 dev kits, powered by the NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor with 192 CUDA cores.

The team has created a self-contained computational storage cluster capable of executing deep learning and image classification algorithms in near real time, while delivering the highest general purpose performance per watt.

Built on the same NVIDIA Kepler® GPU architecture that powers the world's fastest supercomputers, Tegra K1 delivers 192 fully programmable CUDA cores for advanced graphics and compute performance.

"Reneo's goal is to enable the most seamless integration between concepts on one hand and computation result on the other. Our solution is already running on common HPC environments, and is currently deployed in several locations, processing terabytes of data on a daily basis. But we are aiming for something far more ambitious by enabling the next generation storage appliances that are capable of deriving knowledge in near real time thanks to embedded networking and HPC capabilities," says Minesh B. Amin, CEO and Founder of Reneo.

The cluster can easily process one terabyte of data in under 6 minutes. This performance is made possible by a robust parallel runtime environment and a hardware stack made up of 96 terabytes of POSIX compliant parallel storage, 30 TFLOPS of peak computing capability, and has a cross-section bandwidth of 96 Gbs. Furthermore, by connecting the cluster to Echostreams' FlacheSAN1L storage, image data can be exchanged at a rate of 40 Gbps, while ensuring that total power consumed is limited to 1400 Watts.

"Having the ability to deploy a computational storage appliance at the edge of our networks as well as in our data centers gives us the ability to maximize resource utilization acrossour core telecom and IT assets," said Jérome Laudouar, VP, IT Infrastructure Technologies & Engineering of Orange.

Echostreams is collaborating with Reno and Orange Silicon Valley to investigate ways by which to leverage the concepts behind the cluster for enterprise grade computational storage appliances with built-in deep learning capabilities.

"When you have high efficient computing cluster solutions from Reneo and Orange combining with EchoStreams' high performance storage solutions, one can imagine the convergence of the storage and compute technologies opening many possibilities in the near future. EchoStreams is committed to provide a unique platform for this convergence together with Orange and Reneo," said Andy Lee, director of Product Marketing at EchoStreams.

"The CUDA cores in the Tegra K1 processor provide a very low-power platform to deploy this computational storage appliance," said Doug MacMillan, Director, WW Mobile & Embedded Marketing at NVIDIA. "Orange Silicon Valley and Reneo's SC14 cluster demo harnesses the compute power of Jetson TK1 to process massive volumes of data with incredible performance efficiency."
